"To affirm that men and women are persons and as persons should be free, and yet to do nothing tangible to make this affirmation a reality, is a farce" Paulo Freire
EAD 850 Issues & Strategies in Multicultural Education Dr. Riyad Shahjahan, Ph. d.
Through this course I discovered how the unique social dynamics of ethnic, racial, gender, ability, sexuality, religious, and socioeconomic differences influence youth and adult education. I gained a deeper understanding of difference and diversity, while learning their interconnectedness to issues such as privilege, power, and oppression. I examined and challenged multicultural practices and political policies by rewriting them in such a way that they truly promoted and leveraged the benefits of diversity.
EAD 830 Issues in Urban education: Racial Achievement gap dr. Christopher Dunbar, ph. d.
This course was centered on examining the factors that are perceived to contribute to the racial achievement gap. I investigated the characteristics of poverty and how they often perpetuate not only the cycle of poverty, but also the persistent racial learning gap. While learning of the societal factors, whether political, social, or economic, that impact the educational experience of America’s minority youth, I also discovered the structural inequalities that exist within the institution of education. I have learned that until all of these factors are challenged, they will inevitably impede our children’s ability to reach their fullest potential.
